Our annual Skyvan Boogie offered some great jumps on day 1 and the 90 some people that registered got to enjoy the OE-FDK skyvan all day. Again we had the pleasure of having both Dave Lewis and Helle Eriksen so organize 2 bigway groups. Here’s my footage from the jumps that Dave’s group made.

Also check out the images from the 4 jumps here:

Base jump photography – learning some new skills with every jump

Dave from Exit 6 at Kjerag in August 2010

It’s August and my second trip to Norway this year. I’m experimenting with my Canon 450 on some of the jumps and getting some good results already. There still a lot to learn and improve but I think I have got the basics covered on how to test the light conditions right after exit – at least for the exiting, freefall and canopy flight action off the Kjerag exit points.

Here’s some examples from July and August

Learning some Big Way video skills

Above: 19-way first point on Sunday September 27th

The annual Skyvan Boogie has been hosted by our club (Faldskaermsklubben.dk)  since 1988. It’s one of those traditional boogies that people return to over and over again. This time we had about 100 registered jumpers, doing Freefly, RW skill camp, Big Ways, club record attempts or even first ever solo jump from the Skyvan.

I took the chance to build some more experience to my video man skills. So I signed up as secondary video man on the Big Way camp organized by Dave Lewis.

Diving from the back of the Skyvan

My first task was to dive off with the last jumpers and follow them down as the formation was building on the base. That felt just like being part of the big way myself. I think I got a decent result, but see for yourself in full color HD youtube style. Next time I think I will try to stay behind a jumper to video him or her close up during the full dive – that should make some nice footage.

Constantly anticipating distance and angle

I got to do 5 jumps with the big way, and on the last 4 I was the primary video guy. That surely gave me a chance to work on where to fly and where not to fly. Constantly trying to anticipate what the best distance and angle would be during each exit, float off and above the formation as it went through the points and point attempts. Here’s a peak at the 19-way that was completed on Sunday.

Please enjoy all 5 jumps here

My girlfriend = a Hero

My girlfriend Alice brought the GoPro Hero Wide along on most of the jumps. She provided an excellent ‘inside-the-formation point of view’. She now has the GoPro click mount permanently taped to her full face Z1, so she can document more jumps next time out. Please enjoy her video here.

The video guy gets a bonus

I also found there are other wonderful benefits of being the video man. I get to enjoy and document some magnificent views. Take a look at this one per example.

On the last 3 dives I also added my Canon 450. See the full gallery here

More please more…

I had loads of fun so I hope to get to do more big way video stuff when opportunity strikes again.
